HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis

This course is suitable for all support workers. It provides information about HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis and general requirements under the COSHH Regulations. The information will then be used to develop effective strategies of good working practice for dealing with bodily fluids safely.

The learning objectives:

By the end of this course the learner should be able to understand:

• What is involved in Universal Precautions and why this safe practice needs to be applied at all times
• What actions workers can take to limit the risk to themselves
• What actions can be taken to stop the spread of infection within the workplace
• How to deal with needle stick injuries
• Immunisation and treatment available
• The Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 1992
• The basic requirements under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999 (COSHH)
  (as amended) including:
        -safe working practice relating to the use of chemicals
        -appropriate methods for dealing with waste and spillage
• RIDDOR 1995
• Basic information to the transmission of:
        -HIV
        -Hepatitis A, B, C, D & E
• The importance of understanding the confidentiality policy of the organisation and what the main features are
