Building Positive Relationships (1-2 days)

Not everyone ‘naturally’ has the skills to engage positively with individuals and teams; however, in the interest of all parties it is essential that Managers/senior staff are able to do so.
This course is designed for Care Managers, Deputy Managers and Supervisors working within residential, domiciliary, supported living and day centre settings.
The course aims to introduce and enhance communication skills and awareness that might foster positive and productive professional relationships.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course learners should be able to understand:

• The different ways in which people communicate
• The importance for the Manager to communicate effectively:
        -Active listening skills
        -Written skills
• The potential consequences if Managers do not communicate effectively
• The skills involved in motivating and actively involving others
• How effective communication can motivate others
• The skills that are required to enhance dignity in the work setting
• Written skills: Consequences of poorly executed reports
• The key components of effective written communication -to include:
        -Exaggerations
        -Inaccuracies
        -Judgment
        -Stereotyping etc
• Effective verbal communication:
• How to deliver messages/information clearly and assertively
• The need to ‘hear’ what people are saying
• What is meant by ‘Active listening’
• Why is it important to be able to facilitate others’ expression
• The need for boundaries; you are not a therapist!
• Empathy: What does this mean and why empathise?
• How to communicate with empathy
• The confusion that often exists between empathy and collusion

• The need for limited self disclose:
