Communication Approaches when Supporting People with Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC)

This one-day course focuses on the communication issues which arise when supporting a person with Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC). The underlying ethos is the importance of a person-centred approach. There is a strong practical element and covers proven strategies and interventions, giving delegates powerful tools which can be adapted to provide person-centred solutions. It is designed for families and professionals who work with people with ASC.
The day begins with a discussion of autism and current research. The trainer clarifies the meaning of “person-centred”, and addresses many of the communication issues which arise when supporting someone who has ASC.
For example a person may
• be non-verbal
• use echolalia
• think in pictures
• not initiate conversation
• take things literally
• need time to process
• use behaviour to communicate
• require detailed plans
• not understand body language

The trainer will be using many real-life examples provided by people with ASC, giving an deep insight into what it is like to be on the autistic spectrum.
Various methods of aiding communication for those with autism will be suggested, with some practical examples.
The day includes interactive participation, demonstrations, and film clips.
The trainer will facilitate discussion and, where possible, suggest strategies and solutions.
