Course Profile: Communication with Older People (1 Day)
This course is totally focused on the different issues for some Older People regarding communication; particularly those with Dementia. Other issues are considered such as hearing impairment. Solutions to challenges will be offered and learners will have the opportunity to practice a range of communication skills

The course is designed for front line health & support workers who work in a variety of settings with Older People.

The course will assist the organisation meeting CQC requirement Outcomes 1 & 4.
Learning outcomes

By the end of the course learners should understand:

• What is meant by effective communication and the importance for all people
• The consequences of poor communication
• The general barriers to effective communication and those later in life
• The importance of Person Centred care and social inclusion
• How Diversity, dignity, choices and are at the centre of effective communication
• The consequences for Older People when they are excluded and socially isolated
• The need for Older People for continuing relationships and possibly to develop new relationships
• The importance of trust
• Skills and approaches to aid communication:
  Active listening & non verbal communication
• How to approach particular difficulties:
  Confusion in time, place and person, Restlessness and poor concentration, Anxiety etc.
• The impact of hearing and sight impairment and responding to these

Training methods utilised include small and larger Group Work, Tutor presentations, PowerPoint, Chalk & Talk, Handouts, Word Shower method, Listening exercise, Practice examples, Questions and answers, Role play, Feedback
