Dignity and Respect – Practice (1 day)

We all have our own ideas of what dignity and respect mean when providing services and as we all know, common sense is not all that common! When personal standards are applied there is room for a great variation of standards and therefore professionalism guidance seeks to provide a base line of acceptable practice.

This course, designed for ‘front line’ workers aims to provide a very clear understanding of the current view of respectful and dignified support so that acceptable standards are consistently applied.

Learning objectives:

By the end of this training learners should be able to understand:

• How care and support has moved away from Institutional and ‘batch care’ to a more individualised, dignified and
  less controlling model.
• The negative experience of service users in the past.
        -In Institutions
        -In the Law
        -In Society in general
• What is expected now. To include:
        -National Standards
        -Professional Codes of Practice
        -Human Rights etc.
• What is meant by ‘Dignity’, ‘Respect, ‘Quality of life’, ‘Client led’, ‘Empowering’ etc
• The factors that may affect an individual’s dignity and respect.
• How we need to consider: If we were to receive care/ support for ourselves or a relative, what would we expect to
see from the service providers? E.g. if we were visiting a home what would we be looking for in terms of the
service being provided that indicated that respect and dignity were being afforded?
• The need to apply the theory in every day practice. Do we practice what we preach?
• What each one of us can do to ensure that the service we work for promotes dignity and respect.
• How we need to internally advocate for service users
• How each one of us needs to influence our team and indeed, the Manager and organisation. What can we do if
  this meets resistance?
• How we need to ensure that care plans are constructed in a way that promotes dignity and respect
