Disability Awareness (1-2 days)
Lack of understanding of the issues faced by service users with
disabilities/sensory impairment can result in poor support being provided;
patronising and disempowering in character.
This course, designed for front line workers aims to equip participants with
a basic framework of knowledge and skills so as to work in a thoughtful,
sensitive and respectful manner.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course participants should be able to:
• Understand a range of definitions and different views of these e.g.
Disability/Disabled and Disability /Impairment etc.
• Describe the way in which people with Disabilities were ‘cared for’ in institutions and the impact of these
institutions on their human rights and
potential.
• Provide an overview of the current context in which people are supported.
• Understand the legal framework -incl.The Disabled Person’s Act.
• Understand how a Physical Disability might impact on the person’s quality
of life?
• Describe how Discrimination, Maginalisation, Infantilism, Disablism may
impact.
• Describe the Social Model of Disability.
• Understand what is meant by ‘Normalisation’, ‘SRV’, and ‘Ordinary Living’.
• Understand how myths relating to Disability disadvantages and demeans
people-incl. issues of personal relationships
& sexuality.
• Understand what is meant by a ‘Person Centred’ approach to supporting
people.
• Understand what is meant by ‘Empowerment’, ‘Advocacy’ and ‘Self Advocacy’.
• Know the resources available to help in the support of people.
