Dual Diagnosis (Mental Health & Learning Disability)
Assessment, Planning & Intervention (1-2 days)*

This course is designed for staff at all levels in both Learning Disability and Mental Health services with the view to explore some of the complex issues relating to Dual Diagnosis.
By the end of the course learners will have broadened their professional networks and identified shared strategies of assessment, planning and intervention for service users with the dual diagnosis of Learning Disability and Mental Health.

Learning objectives:

• What is meant by Dual Diagnosis
• The perspectives of mainstream Mental Health professionals and Learning Disability services
• Why some people are anxious about working with this service user group
• Learning Disability conditions and syndromes:
        -Autism
        -Prader Willi
        -Fragile X
        -Downs Syndrome
        -Aspergers
• Mental Health conditions/diagnosis
        -Anxieties and Phobias
        -Depression
        -Schizophrenia
        -Bipolar Disorder
        -Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
        -Eating Disorders
        -Dementia
• Difficulties faced by professionals in diagnosing and what we can do to aid the effectiveness of a clear diagnosis
• Assessment tools uses by professionals in the field of Mental Health and Behavioural Analysis

• Functional Analysis, including: G la Vinga. O’Niel. Durand.
• Therapeutic interventions:
        -Medication
        -Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
        etc.
• Capacity and consent to treatment, confidentiality and the limitations of some therapies
• The need for a multi agency and multi disciplinary approach
• Conflict between agencies and what we can do to enable a positive outcome in joint working
• The processes of multi-disciplinary assessment, planning and intervention
• Practical strategies to support service users
