Course Profile: Equality, Diversity for Care/Support Staff (Min.1 day-Max.3 days)
This course is consistent with CQC requirements and aims is to raise learners’ understanding of Equality, Diversity and Human Rights so that the quality of service users’ support is enhanced.

Learners will explore the negative and sometimes disabling impact of discriminatory behaviour on the individual; what it might feel like to be regarded and treated in an inappropriate way and what it might be like to be undervalued, marginalised and oppressed. Learners will understand the legal, professional and organisational requirements of them and how to adopt a positive approach to Diversity; both with colleagues, service users and others they encounter.

The course is designed for staff working in Health or Social Care in a variety of settings & disciplines.
The course can be adapted for those who do not have supportive roles e.g. Admin staff and for more complex learning needs e.g. Managers
Learning outcomes

By the end of the course learners should understand:

• What is meant by the terms ‘Equality’ and ‘Diversity’ and what is the difference between the two.
• What it might feel like to be marginalised/oppressed and how this may impact on the individual’s thinking, behaviour and
  potential.
• Which groups of people have tended to be undervalued in our society and how.
• Language and behaviour that may reinforce the marginalisation of people or be experienced
  as being offensive/oppressive.
• Other factors that may discriminate or lead to perception of discrimination.
• The essence of the Equality Act, The Human Rights Act 1998
• Definitions: Protected characteristics, Direct Discrimination, Indirect Discrimination, Composite Discrimination, Third Party
  Discrimination, Harrassment etc.
• What would be considered as dignified & respectful behaviour towards colleagues & service users.
• Guidance in ‘The Code of Conduct for Social Care Workers’.
• How to apply the principles when supporting service users in:
  Communication, Personal care, Food preferences, Social and Sexual engagement, Cultural and Religious identity &
  expression, Festivals & Celebration, Clothing, Touch, Family, Bereavement, Gender and Sexual orientation etc.
• How to access a range of sources of information about Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
The subject matter can raise uncomfortable feelings. The trainers therefore are mindful of the need to work in a supportive way. This course is particularly interactive and participants will have the opportunity to explore issues through presentations / Chalk & Talk, facilitated discussion, small and larger group work, word shower method, quizzes, OHP/PowerPoint, Handouts.
