Food Hygiene (Mental Health at home)

This one day course is specifically designed for people with Mental Health needs who require training in food hygiene so that they can prepare food safely at home.

The tutor has considerable knowledge and experience of working with this service user group and is sensitive to the challenges that are commonly presented. Learners are issued with a certificate of attendance by Norman Mark Training.

Please note that this course could be delivered in ΄situ΄ e.g. a group home kitchen.

Learning objectives:

By the end of the course learners should be able to understand:


• Why it is important to handle food safely at home
• The dangers of poor hygiene
• What is food poisoning
• The signs and symptoms of food poisoning
• Food safety-the dangers
• Safe cooking temperatures
• Safe cooling and storage temperatures
• How to check temperatures
• Reheating food-the dangers
• How a person could make food unsafe
• How food can be contaminated in other ways
• Storing different types of food
• Sell by dates
• The importance of cleaning the kitchen and cooking equipment

Training methods:

The training methods used on this course are varied and are adapted to reflect the learning needs of the particular learners. This will include flexible start and finish times as well as breaks.

The trainer will acknowledge how food hygiene takes a little more time and effort and demonstrate understanding of how personal difficulties can make good food hygiene a bit of a chore. e.g. Tiredness, restlessness, poor concentration, the effects of medication, hearing voices, financial difficulties etc.
