Working Alone & Working with Risk-Learning Disabilities
This course aims to provide awareness of safer working practice
for lone working. Participants will be familiar with the principles of risk
assessment as well as risk management within this context. At the end of the
course participants should be ‘Risk Aware’ with the ability to identify risks
to Service Users, self and others. They should be able to implement safety
measures using provided Assessment tools.
Learning objectives:
By the end of the course participants should be able to understand:
• The difference between ‘Hazards & Risks’
• What we mean by ‘reasonable risk’
• Why we take risks in life (in general) and the importance of risk taking in
social care and support settings
• What we mean by “Risk Assessment” and why is important to “Risk Assess”
• Some of the tensions that exist when needing to work with Risk in Person
Centred services and service users’ right
to independence
• The personal implications of working with Risk and managing these
• The value of Risk Screening and compiling Risk Events History
• Areas of Risk relevant to the Service Group i.e. Suicide, Self Harm,
Exploitation, lack of danger awareness
• Legislation that underpins Risk Assessment and Lone Working
• How to carry out a Risk Assessment
• How Risk Assessments integrate with individual Support Plans
• What we mean by generic Risk Assessments and when these are appropriate
• Developing an analytical approach regarding Risk Events using critical
incident analysis model
• Challenging behaviour, the triggers and impact
• Crisis and Contingency Planning
• What Lone Working means to workers within the organisation
• Why have a safe working practices policy
• The objectives of a ‘Working Alone’ policy
• How the core objectives of Supporting People links with the organisation’s
