Managing Performance (1-2 days)

The failure to respond appropriate to underperformance can lead to staff discontent, a poorly functioning service and in the end, costly litigation.

This course designed for senior staff and Managers aims to ensure that they approach this sensitive area in a professional and confident manner; mindful of the Law, organisational policy and procedures and Good Practice.

Learning objectives:

By the end of the course participants should be able to:

• Understand the role of the Manager
• Identify the skills and responsibilities of the Manager
• Identify signs of over/under Supervision
• Explain the terms ‘objectives’ and ‘standards’
• Set standards: what do we need to know?
• Describe what is meant by ‘performance’
• Explain why performance requires managing
• Explain what constitutes an effective performance objective and how can it be monitored
• Understand how to identify signs that a staff member may have a performance problem and the factors that might
  lead to this
• Identify reasons for poor performance (Ability, Aptitude, Attitude) and strategies for managing each
• Understand the importance of effective investigation and assessment
• Understand the role of the disciplinary procedure
• Know how to identify resistance to change and techniques to manage this
• Know the systems and structures for measuring/monitoring performance
• Know how to give feedback
• Understand the importance of documentation in the performance management process
• Understand how to be more effective in:
        -Assertiveness
        -Negotiation
        -Conflict resolution
        -Communication
        -Delegation
        -Time management
