Moving & Handling People (1/2 day update)

This course is aimed at support workers who are required to assist and move people while at work and have been on Moving & Handling training within the previous 18 months.

The course will give a theoretical framework on how the body works and how we can look after it, but the main focus will be how this information can be applied to “real life” situations. Participants will be encouraged to share their experience and to participate in using equipment and techniques recommended by The Guide to Handling of People (5th Edition).

Because of the practical nature of this course the number attending is limited to 10. The course is particularly effective when delivered in the work situation.
N.B. Participants are advised to wear trousers and flat shoes.

Learning objectives:

By the end of this course participants should be able to understand:

• The functions of the spine and musculo-skeletal system
• What is ‘top heavy’ movement and cumulative strain
• The importance of good posture and good back care, including stretching
• An update of Manual Handling legislation with reference to The Manual Handling Operations Regulations
  1992 (amended 2002)
• How to apply the Risk Assessment to the work situation, looking at:
        - the task
        -the person/load
        -the environment
        -individual capability
• Ergonomic solutions
• The use of good Moving & Handling technique when assisting a person
• The variety of handling aids and equipment available
• Applying the skills to practical work-based Moving & Handling situations
• Appropriate care practice when Moving and Handling e.g. demonstrating respect and ensuring dignity
