Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (1 Day)

The support needs of people experiencing Obsessive Compulsive Disorder may appear to the untrained as being relatively simple. i.e. “lets stop the ritualistic behaviour”.
For the person involved, not only may this not be helpful but may be extremely distressing, leading to breakdown and in same cases more dramatic self harm.

Learning objectives:

By the end of this training participants should have understood:


• What is meant by Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
• Is there a personality type?
• DSM references
• Who experiences this:
        -age
        -gender etc.
• The signs and symptoms
• What “causes” this:
        -A Psychodynamic view
        -A Humanistic view
        -The Psychiatric perspective
• What it might be like to experience OCD. The impact on:
        -Self esteem
        -Work
        -Personal relationships
        -Health etc.
• Thoughts, feelings and behaviour: Understanding the function of rituals
• Safety alert: Uninformed support and the dangers
• The treatments that are available (To include):
        -Medication
        -Psychotherapy (Individual & Group)
        -Behavioural treatment
        -Cognitive Behavioural Treatment.
        -Rational Emotive Counselling
• What can be achieved in a Social Care setting
• The risks and the need to risk assess and manage
• A multi-disciplinary approach- finding the right person for the job
• Rituals within other Mental Heath diagnosis e.g. Schizophrenia
• Rituals as a feature within Learning Disabilities
• The support options that are available
• The role of the support worker
• The limitations of support within a social care setting
