Respectful Personal Care (1 day)
Receiving and indeed providing support for personal care can be
very difficult indeed. Much of the activity challenges people’s personal and
cultural norms and can lead to considerable embarrassment.
This course, designed for support workers aims to raise awareness of the need
for dignity and respect for all service users in this sensitive area. Areas
considered include support with bathing, washing, dressing, managing
continence etc.
The course certificate will provide NVQ and CIS links.
Learning outcomes:
By the end of this training learners should be able to understand:
• How people have different ‘norms’ in terms of privacy, modesty and
standards regarding personal care and hygiene
• How personal care needs vary:
-generational
-cultural
-religious
-gender
• How people were treated in the past – how personal care was approached in
Institutions
• The move to care and support in the community
• The options for support in the current context
• References to various guidelines relating to personal care
• Principles of Good Practice
• What it might feel like to have support with personal care
• How this could impact on the person’s self-esteem
• The potential embarrassment / humiliation that may be experienced when
assisted with Personal Care
• How language and terminology can be ‘infantalising’
• How to ensure that the Care Plan reflects the personal needs and wishes of

• How to assess risk in this area
• How the Key Worker can promote dignity and work in a Person Centred way
• What would constitute abuse and what to look out for
• How to respond to a suspicion of abuse

-dressing etc.
