Skills Assessment/Goal Setting
This course has been designed to aid care staff and first line managers in the
assessment of skills and skills teaching. Skills Assessment explores the
individual needs of the people we provide a service for whilst remaining aware
of different learning styles and communication systems.
Learning objectives:
By the end of the course learners should understand:
• The historical and current views and interpretations of “Normalisation” and
“Ordinary Living”
• Background to individual skills assessment and goal setting
• How to plan and assess in preparation for devising and implementing individual
support plans

• How to assess the likes and dislikes of individual service users

• Confidentiality issues
• How to encourage service user participation with appropriate levels of support
• How to identify baseline skills inventory
• The importance of working with other disciplines
• A systematic approach to formulating teaching plans
• The roles and responsibilities of staff during the goal setting process
