Stroke Awareness
This one day course examines the causes and effects of strokes. The course
also examines the impact of a stroke on the independence, dignity and choice of
the individual.
Learners should gain an understanding of the mental and physical impact, the
changing needs and their role in the management of such conditions to enhance
and maintain the best possible quality of life.
Learning objectives:
By the end of this training learners should be able to understand:
• What a stroke is
• The different causes/predisposing factors of strokes e.g.
-Lifestyle
-Heredity factors
• The signs and symptoms
• The incidence
• The impact of a stroke on the individual
• The impact on those around them
• The First Aid response to a stroke
• The initial treatment, time span and prognosis
• The physical and mental manifestations of a stroke
• How to respond to the physical and mental needs of a stroke in a person
• How to recognise and address the changed/changing needs of the person
• The impact and benefit of Person Centred care and support
• The specific problems associated with communication and swallowing
• What happens to people physically and emotionally when they are excluded and
socially isolated
• Methods of support and challenges that may occur and how to respond to them
• How dignity, choices and preferences and the support and promotion
of independence can enhance the quality of life
of the individual
• The skills required for effective care and support
• The effectiveness and importance of using multi-agencies and team working
• NICE guidance and government strategies
