Supervision/Appraisal (An overview) (1 Day) *

Supervision & Appraisal are major managerial tools in Social Care and support. The success of Supervision & Appraisal depends to a large degree on a common understanding of the particular system in use, the interpersonal skills of the supervisor/appraiser and the assertiveness of the Supervisee/Appraisee.

This course offers a basic introduction to their purpose and function. The course will also examine how, when used well, Supervision should be supportive and educative and lead to improved worker performance and better service provision.

Learning objectives:

By the end of this training learners should be able to:

• Understand the concept of Supervision and Appraisal and the legal implications.
• Understand why these are such important elements of practice and how they link
• The function of Supervision-Including the Supervision agreement, record and log of personal development).
• Explain what the accountability and boundary issues are.
• Work within the organisation’s confidentiality policy.
• Understand the responsibilities of the Supervisor and Supervisee.
• Explain what the limits are of these roles.
• Describe what is meant by a Person Centred approach.
• Know how to approach a session, balancing the 3 elements.
• Know how to prepare for and approach the facilitation of an Appraisal session.
